That's Typical (30 mins)

Goal of activity:
To get students clear on gender stereotypcial behaviour
To have students gain empathy for the other gender
To increase awareness of differences and similarities between boys and girls
Students learn to play out a story, by reading a short introduction and improvising.

Activity guidelines:
The students are going to do a series of role plays about gender differences in our society. Typical scenes we all know well. Use the stories below

Step 1:

Divide the class into groups so that each group has 4 or 5 in it.
Step 2:
Give each group one of the stories below
Step 3:
Allow the groups 10 mins to prepare and test out their role play.
Step 4:
Get at least three groups to act our their role play for the class.
Step 5:
Discuss what happened in the role plays.

Tip:
If you have mixed group, all the better, encourage young people to play the role of the opposite gender.

Stories:

Story 1.
A doctor and a nurse have been having an affair at work. The doctor man is married and has a large family. The nurse finds out she is pregnant and comes to the doctors office to give him the news. How does he react.

Story 2.
A 16 year old girl is suddenly confronted by her mother with the news that she can no longer continue her studies but must go to the city to work for an aunt. How does she react.

Story 3.
The sports teacher requests a girl to stay behind after class he wants to discuss something with her. The teacher tells the girl, you are very keen on football but it is not an appropriate sport for girls, couldn’t she consider taking another sport like volleyball. The girl disagrees.

Story 4:
A girl Jummai asks a boy out on a date. The boy thinks she wants intercourse because she has asked him out. The girls likes the boy but does not want intercourse. What do they say to each other?
