Circles of influence (30 mins)
Goal of activity:Students explore the factors that influence their gender roles in life
Activity guidelines:
In this activity students use powerpoint to organise the influence of religion, media, friends, family, society and school on their life and gender roles in life.
Step 1:
Tell students to open the powerpoint template called Influence.ppt
Step 2:
They should write their name in the middle of the circles
Step 3:
Drag the factors religion, society, friends etc as close to the middle of the circles depending on how much influence they think that factor as on your life
For example if a student thinks their life is mainly influenced by their family, they should drag the family nearest to their name in the center, if they think the media is next strongest influence drag them near to you too but not as near as family and so on. See below for example
Step 4:
Each student should write a few lines on how they think each of the influences affects them. They can write on the computer or in their copybook.
Step 5:
When everyone has finished, hold a discussion on what they have learnt or doscoevred while doing this activity.
Questions you can ask:
Who has the most influence on you?
Why is that?
Who else did you discover has influence on you that you didn't think of before?
Round up:
As we grow older our peers gain more influence on us and the influence of adults diminishes.
Society in all these different forms influence our role in life and especially our gender role. Our role as a woman or a man.
